On 3 December 2025, Uttara University’s Department of Law organized a community meeting in association with the District Legal Aid Office, Tangail to raise awareness on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). The meeting took place in Beribaid Union, Madhupur, Tangail.

Chief Legal Aid Officer (Tangail) Mr. Abu Taher Tahsan was present in that meeting. From Uttara University, Associate Professor Dr. Omar Faruque Munshi led the team consisting of Assistant Professor Dr. Md. Faruk Hossain, Lecturers Md. Rakibul Hasan Roni, Asaduzzaman Sohag and Md. Jahidul Islam Oyon. Moreover, the coordinator of the village court project, panel chairman and members of the Beribaid union council, and around fifty participants from the locality were present in the meeting.

At the meeting, Dr. Omar Faruque Munshi said that the purpose of alternative dispute resolution is to make justice accessible to the people right at their doorstep. The formal judicial process is in many cases cumbersome, sluggish and unaffordable. ADR goes beyond the formal process and takes all parties towards a resolution.

The Chief Legal Aid Officer (Tangail), Mr. Abu Taher Tahsan, highlighted in his speech how the Legal Aid Office is playing a role in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Regularly, disputing parties are coming to a resolution completely free of charge through the mediation of the Legal Aid Office. Mr. Abu Taher emphasized that a sincere willingness to resolve the issue on the part of both parties is essential for successful mediation.

In the open discussion session, attending public participated spontaneously. It became clear from the open discussion that while there is adequate understanding of ADR at the leadership level, there is a lack of information on the subject among the general public. Dr. Omar Faruque Munshi emphasized that the concept of ADR must be clear not just at the leadership level, but also among the general populace. Only then can the proper benefits of this process be realized.

This awareness program is part of a larger research project of Uttara University’s Law Department. The Law Department hopes that, in continuance of this meeting, they will organize many more such events in the future.
