Uttara University marked a significant milestone in its internationalisation journey through its active participation in the 5th Annual Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) 2026, organised by Times Higher Education (THE) in Jakarta, Indonesia. Bringing together global leaders from academia, government, industry and civil society, the congress served as a premier platform for advancing collaborative solutions to the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.

Representing Uttara University at this prestigious global forum were Abid Aziz, Honourable Member of the Board of Trustees, and Sheikh Yasha Shan, Director of the Office of the Institutional Ranking Cell (IRC). Through strategic engagement across multiple high-level sessions, the delegation positioned Uttara University as an emerging contributor to global sustainability discourse and international academic collaboration.

Highlighting the university’s long-term vision for global integration, the Honourable Member of the Board of Trustees stated:

“Our participation in the GSDC 2026 underscores Uttara University’s constant dedication to fostering international alliances that transcend borders. By aligning our institutional goals with global sustainability standards, we are enhancing our academic excellence and ensuring that our graduates are equipped to become responsible, forward-thinking global citizens who can meaningfully address the climate and social challenges of tomorrow.”

Emphasizing the operationalization of these sustainability goals within the university’s academic framework, the Director of the IRC added:

“Engaging with global thought leaders at this level provides us with invaluable insights to refine our research benchmarks and institutional metrics.”

A Global Platform for Sustainable Transformation

Held over four days, GSDC 2026 brought together global institutions under the theme “Collective Action for a Sustainable Future” to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through collaboration and innovation.

During the congress, Uttara University engaged in strategic discussions on international partnerships focused on collaborative research, academic exchange, joint programmes, and innovation initiatives in key areas including climate resilience, clean energy, data equity and public health.

Commitment to Global Mobility and Collaborative Research

The congress further enabled discussions on structured faculty and student mobility programmes, creating pathways for cross-cultural learning and international academic exposure. Additionally, collaborative research initiatives were explored to address critical environmental, economic and societal challenges through multidisciplinary approaches. These emerging partnerships reflect Uttara University’s commitment to aligning institutional policies, research agendas and educational practices with internationally recognised sustainability standards and development frameworks.

Engagement Across Six Global Sustainability Tracks

Throughout the congress, the Uttara University delegation actively engaged in discussions across six key thematic areas: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Digital Innovation and Artificial Intelligence, Inclusive and Accessible Education, Renewable Energy and the Green Transition, Environmental Stewardship and One Health and Well-being. These sessions provided valuable insights into innovative strategies and collaborative approaches for addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable, inclusive development.
