Uttara University is committed to a healthy, safe and clean environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Smoking and tobacco use are prohibited at all indoor and outdoor locations on all campuses. There are no designated smoking areas.

This Policy protects the University community from tobacco smoke, promotes healthy behaviour, keeps the campus clean, and supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). It follows national tobacco control law (Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act, 2005, as amended by the 2013 Amendment Act and the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Act, 2026) and the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. It applies to all students, faculty, staff, visitors, contractors, vendors and event participants on University premises (all land, buildings, residences, vehicles and facilities owned, leased or controlled by the University).

The following are prohibited at all indoor and outdoor

Responsibilities

Violations can be reported to the focal person, the Proctor’s Office, Hostel Supervisors or Security. The University takes an educational approach first:

Visitors and contractors are asked to comply or leave, and repeated breaches may affect contracts or access.

The Policy is communicated through the website, orientation, notice boards and bilingual (English and Bangla) signage. The University runs awareness activities at least once a year and keeps records of them. Anyone who wants to quit tobacco is referred confidentially to the Medical & Emergency Centre and the Mental Health Unit, and seeking help does not lead to disciplinary action.

Publication and Review

Published on the University website and shared with new students and staff at orientation. Reviewed at least every three years.
